Medical tourism in India

India is one of the most popular destinations for medical tourism in the world because of its extremely low relative cost and very high quality of education.  The Indian government and private hospitals are committed to making India the world leader in the healthcare field.  The healthcare sector in India has been growing at an enormous pace.  In 2002, India’s health care industry contributed more than 5% of the gross domestic product and employed about four million people. Medical tourism in India is on the rise and is growing by close to 25% each year.  A recent McKinsey & Company survey says medical tourism is expected to become a two billion dollar market by the year 2010.

With well qualified and highly skilled professionals in almost every medical field, India is successfully competing at par with other medical destinations.  This large pool of medical professionals is fed by about 200 medical colleges who graduate about 20,000 students each year; about 6000 of these students then move on to one of 136 medical schools throughout India. A good portion of Indian doctors have also been schooled or trained in the United Kingdom, United States and Europe.  Many of these students are educated at some of the top universities and hospitals and return to India because of the massive inefficiencies in American and UK medical systems.

  • The cost of medical treatment in India is the cheapest in all of Asia and almost 30% lower than equivalent care in Western countries.
  • India’s large populace of good English speaking doctors, guides and medical staff is a major comfort factor that invites so many medical tourists to India for medical and health tourism.
  • Indian doctors excel in orthopedic surgery, transplants, joint replacements, organ transplants and are exceptional in cardiology and dental treatments.
  • Innovative procedures like hip resurfacing have been performed for years in India and were finally approved by the FDA in the U.S. in 2006.
  • Some of the medical services include MRI, cancer screening, comprehensive physicals, coronary risk, 12 lead ECG, 2D echo Color Doppler, Bone densitometry, body fat analysis, full body pathology and much more.
  • Indian hospitals have extensive expertise in performing successful bone marrow transplants, cardiac surgeries,  liver transplants, ophthalmology, and neurosurgery
  • Escorts Heart Institute and Research Center perform almost 15,000 heart surgeries a year.  The death rate is only 0.8 percent during surgery, which is less than half that of the top hospitals in the United States according to a study by the University of Delaware.
  • The Indian pharmaceutical and drug industry meet stringent Quality Assurance requirements set out by the United State’s FDA guidelines.  This fact is contributing to the growth of this industry.
  • Infertility treatment costs in India is about one quarter of that in developed nations and the availability of modern assisted reproductive techniques, like IVF, and Assisted Reproductive Technology services have helped make India a popular choice for infertility treatments.

Pros and Cons of India

India is in a unique world of its own.  India is the largest democracy in the world with a population over 1 billion people.  This population contains some of the richest people in the world and also some of the poorest people in the world.  The rich enjoy some of the very best hospitals and doctors in the world, while the poor are forced to go to the public hospitals where most westerners would not want to step foot in.  The disparity in classes in India is great.  The poverty in India can be extreme at times and may be tough to handle for some westerners.  You must be prepared for this as well if you go to India.  Other problems in such a populated country are the transportation infrastructure and the disposal of waste.  They are definitely not up to western standards.  You can shelter yourself fairly well from these problems if you choose by taking a hired car, staying in nice hotels, and going to one of the many high end hospitals in India that are extremely clean.  Once inside one of the eight JCI accredited hospitals you will not know the difference between a top Indian hospital, a British hospital or an American hospital.

All of that aside, India is like no other country in the world to travel.  India is a land of extreme natural beauties.  Kangchenjunga in Northern India, is the third highest mountain in the world.  You can take a camel safari in the deserts to the west, visit the Taj Mahal, sun yourself on the beaches of Goa or get some of the best tea in the world in Darjeeling.  The Dalai Lama is also in exile in this country.  The culture and sites in India compare to no other country on earth.  The tourist options are endless.  Just make sure to get your Visa in advance as they take a little time to get and are somewhat expensive (rates vary depending on  your home country).  The Indian government caters to the medical tourists though and has begun giving out one year medical tourism visas compared to the standard 6 month tourist visa.
